Why Super Channel?

If you're in the market for a new TV, you've probably heard about high-definition television (HDTV). But a lot of people (even some who own HD-capable televisions!) don't quite understand how HDTV works, and how it can maximize their viewing experience. Do you have questions about HDTV and what it can do for you? Read on for an overview of television's latest revolution.

Why HD?

Though HDTV has been around for a few years now, there's never been a better time to make the switch. More and more networks are offering HD programming on HD channels, and HD televisions - previously unaffordable to many shoppers - have come down in price.

So what is it that's so great about HD television?

Well, for one, your favorite programs will come in a whole lot clearer. Imagine watching the exotic locations in your favorite movie in crisp, true-to-life detail, or catching the action in a fast-moving sporting event without the instant replay. High-definition programming makes this possible.

In addition to offering greater clarity, HD television sets are widescreen. This provides a home viewing experience more like what one finds at a movie theatre. As well, new television shows are generally produced in this widescreen format. And even if you're watching "standard"-sized programming, your HD service provider - or your TV itself - can format the images to better fit your widescreen.

Finally, HD technology is quickly becoming the centerpiece of home entertainment. As more and more networks move to digital and HD broadcasts and television prices come down, analogue televisions and signals will become obsolete.

What type of TV is the best option?

In terms of HD-capable televisions, there are many brands and technologies to choose from. All of the technologies below are HD-capable, so you'll need to make your decision based on size and budget:

Direct-View CRT

Pros
  • Similar in size and shape to the television you're used to
  • Priced for shoppers on a budget
Cons
  • Large & boxy
  • Poorer picture quality if native format is SD

Are you equipped?

To view high-definition programming at home, it's essential that you have:

  • An HD-capable television
  • A subscription to a high-definition service provider.

If you have an HD-capable TV but only subscribe to standard-definition (or "regular") programming- you won't notice a substantial difference in the picture quality - in fact, it could look worse because the high-resolution of your HD television can magnify flaws in standard programming.

To receive HD channels your TV must have either a built-in DCR receiver or more commonly, an HD receiver (aka "set top box") from your cable or satellite provider. This technology does not make all channels HD - rather, it allows you to access the provider's high-definition channels.

Along the same lines, most analogue TVs (the standard big, boxy televisions) are not capable of receiving HD signals - so you need to have both an HD-capable TV and either an HD receiver from your service provider or DCR receiver to enjoy the benefits of high-definition programming.
