Super Channel Creative Development Guidelines

Super Channel encourages the advancement of content by and about women, Aboriginal peoples, visible minorities and persons with disabilities.

Applicant Eligibility:

Super Channel accepts submissions solely from Canadian production companies. The applicant must operate principally as a film, documentary or television production entity.

The applicant must be a Canadian citizen and/or a Canadian owned and controlled corporation, as determined in the Investment Canada Act , with its head office based in Canada.

The applicant must possess the experience and level of expertise necessary to complete the project, in Super Channel's sole determination.

The applicant must have secured the rights to present the project for the phase of development relevant to the application, and must submit a chain of title reflecting their ownership of the rights to the project for a period of no less than 24 months.

Project Eligibility:

Submissions will not be reviewed until all materials on the Document Checklist and Application Form have been received. If you have any questions, you may email your Creative Development Executive through our website.

The project must be a feature length film or a feature length documentary. The project must have a projected running time of 75 minutes or more, and it must be intended for release either theatrically, on DVD or on Pay TV.

The script writer must be a Canadian citizen, and we strongly favour projects which are predominantly in the English language.

Official treaty co-productions are eligible for Super Channel development support.

The applicant may not submit more than one project simultaneously. The applicant may make a second submission after a decision on the first submission has been conveyed.

The project must comply with all applicable laws, regulations, standards and policies including any requirements in respect of broadcasting and intellectual property, and will not contravene any civil and criminal laws.

Projects previously supported may only apply for additional development support once the previous development phase is complete and deliverables have been received and approved by Super Channel.

If a project has been rejected by Super Channel during a previous development phase, the project may be resubmitted for a subsequent stage of development, subject to the approval of your regional Creative Development Executive. Please contact your Creative Development Executive prior to re-submitting the project.

Acceptable expenditures include those customarily allowed by Telefilm Canada.

What type of programming is Super Channel looking for?

The best way to find out is to watch Super Channel. We offer development loans solely to feature films and feature length documentaries. Because we’re a premium service, we want premium product. The subject matter should have a "big screen" feel.

What stages will Super Channel fund in development?

We focus on late stage development for both feature films and documentaries.

May I send a demo with my submission?

Yes. Our preference is to receive links to demos that are available online. If you need to send a hard copy of your demo, please contact your Creative Development Executive through the Creative Development Contact Form on the Producers’ Page of our website to obtain their mailing address. Your email will be automatically directed to the Executive responsible for the Province or Territory you specify.

May I pitch in person?

We prefer to review the project first. If it fits our needs, we will contact you and a meeting can be arranged at that time.

When can I expect to hear from you?

When you complete your submission to Super Channel, you will receive an automatic acknowledgement that it has been received. We aim to review projects within six weeks. When we have a particularly high volume of submissions, it may take longer. We appreciate your patience.

How do I contact my Creative Development Executive directly?

You can email the Creative Development team by returning to the Producers' Page and filling out the Creative Development Contact Form. Your email will be automatically directed to the Executive responsible for the Province or Territory you specify.
